Environmental sustainability as an opportunity

In recent years, companies in the global maritime transport business have been constantly required to adjust their strategies to meet the more stringent environmental regulations.

Environmental sustainability has become a serious concern for policy makers and thus one of the key transitional drivers for the entire maritime transport business. Considering these changes, port and shipping operations must put significant effort into establishing greater digital competence. In fact, many of the modern-day technologies and innovations are providing a considerable foundation for opportunity in maritime logistics and port calls, as well as improving efficiency and productivity.

Research (1) shows that through investing in digitalization in the maritime transport business, it is possible not only to reduce fuel and energy consumption and improve overall efficiency, but also to improve profits when integrating digital technologies into the entire operation. The companies that are the most enthusiastic about establishing greater digital competence are gaining a significant advantage in the ever-changing landscape of regulations and performance requirements.

It is worth noting that in 2017, over 80% of the global trade by volume and more than 70% of its value was carried by maritime transport (2).

Global CO2 equivalent emissions from all transport in 2017 were broken down as follows:

  • 1460 million metric tons (from maritime transport)

  • 11040 million metric tons (from other transport)

Global target for CO2 equivalent emissions for 2050:

  • 970 million metric tons (for maritime transport)

  • 3370 million metric tons (for other transport)

It has been estimated that shipping causes approximately 3% of the total human-generated carbon dioxide emissions. The European Parliament (2015) expects this to rise to 17% by 2050. Higher emissions will endanger air quality close to port cities and will generate more health risks (3).

Reducing emissions and the cost of transport

Digitalization and automation are rapidly changing the maritime outlook. Awake.AI provides visibility for future operation days. Ships arrive only when they are required, and port operations are fast and efficient, ultimately leading to improving air quality in port cities.

Traditionally, ships are served in the order they arrive at ports, which leads to long queues and waiting, effectively causing loss of revenue and unnecessary emissions. When ships arrive at the pier, all processes, such as unloading and loading, as well as documentation, should start instantly.

As efficiency at port correlates with the level of trade competitiveness, it gives a strong motive to collaborate with other maritime actors, while also having a positive effect on emissions.

Greener future with Awake.AI

With Awake’s collaboration and port optimization platform, partners can achieve up to 40% reduction in emissions and roughly 20-40% reduced cost of transport and port calls, depending on the part of the logistics chain. Additionally, up to 30% increased productivity can be achieved, which means that 24 hours of work can be conducted in 16 hours, as an example. This also leads to up to 20% increased time for more earnings and development of new services.

Awake’s platform enables better operational planning for all maritime logistics chain actors in real time. Awake.AI is the first to enable remote and autonomous ships to call at ports. Awake’s platform offers improved situational awareness and operational planning through 100% visibility several days ahead.

The value of the shared information in Awake’s platform is constantly evaluated in the ecosystem consisting of other maritime actors. Thus, sharing of data in the platform can bring additional revenue from the entire ecosystem. Depending on its value to others, as much as 5-20% additional revenue can be achieved from the sharing of data. Therefore, more can be achieved together.

Digitalization and automation are introducing entirely new avenues for making maritime logistics and port calls more efficient, eventually leading to cleaner waters, significantly lower emissions, and lower operational costs, as well as wasting less time. A smarter future is also a greener future.

Together we can make an impact

Awake.AI’s mission is to lead the transition to sustainable and intelligent maritime logistics. With Awake’s platform and its growing number of ecosystem partners, the aim is to reduce 10% of the global CO2 emissions from shipping by 2030. Awake.AI is ensuring the future of sustainable and more efficient maritime logistics. Together we can make an impact.
